Atmos Ecologist Published in Biological Conservation Journal

Dr Victoria Sims, Ecologist at Atmos Consulting, recently had a paper published in the Biological Conservation journal.

Victoria contributed to the paper with former colleagues from the University of Sheffield, where she completed her PhD, and De Montford University. The paper explored biodiversity in domestic gardens and some of the findings were based around data collected by Victoria during her PhD.

The paper, entitled The National Scale Inventory of Resource Provision for Biodiversity in Domestic Gardens, builds upon the UK government's promotion of wildlife gardening and presents real data to show the level of resource provision for biodiversity in the country's gardens. The paper concluded that a reduction of gardens in urban areas would have a negative impact on biodiversity, conservation, ecosystem services and the well-being of the human population.

Victoria has been working on Environmental Impact Assessments for client projects. Due to gain her 'bat license' in the next few months she will increasingly assess bat populations and bat activity related to wind farm developments. Having previously worked at the Green Roof Centre at Sheffield University Victoria can also offer advice and experience on sustainable buildings.

Interesting fact: In highly urban areas, cats kill on average only one small animal or bird per year.
